The AGDF is an umbrella and professional association of peace services. The foundations of the AGDF are, on the one hand, rooted in ​​the Protestant Church in Germany, and on the other based on the conviction that peace can not be created by military force, but comes in to being through a process in which injustice, violence, lack of freedom, distress and fear are overcome . The main activities of the members of AGDF include remembrance and reconciliation work, intercultural and peace policy activities on the ground, peace education, qualification in and projects of civilian, nonviolent conflict management and peace service. Of the 32 member organizations, 10 organizations offer international volunteer services.
